Want to challenge your rateable value? The sequence matters.

A business rates “appeal” is not one instant button. The official route starts by checking the property details, then moves through Challenge and, where relevant, Appeal.

Check

GOV.UK says you should raise a Check case if property details are wrong or if you want to challenge the valuation. The property must be added to your business rates valuation account.

Challenge

You must normally complete a Check before sending a Challenge. A Challenge needs valid grounds and evidence.

Appeal

If you disagree with the Challenge decision, or certain response deadlines are reached, the Valuation Tribunal can become relevant.

X-Ray’s role

X-Ray is deliberately upstream of that process. It helps you decide whether deeper investigation appears justified and what evidence is still missing. It does not file the case for you.
